This current series of paintings explores our relationship to the natural world. The paintings depict constructed landscapes based on observation and memory that reference the feeling of intimacy and privacy that we often feel in the public space of nature. The artificial, unnatural materials also relate to the industrial surfaces of the manmade interior spaces that we inhabit and share with friends and family, lovers and even strangers-spaces where interactions both comfortable and uncomfortable take place.
The paintings in this show are inspired by the dramatic landscape that surrounds the city of Chiang Mai. The paintings are not direct depictions of a particular place, instead each work fuses several experiences and spaces together into one image. Much like a dream when time and place often weave in and out of focus, these paintings reflect my experiences as a foreigner living and teaching in Thailand
